| 6th Grade PEAK Communication Arts |
| This course is a comprehensible Communication Arts course for gifted 6th and 7th graders. The focus of this course will be on the integration of reading, writing, and speaking. Students will analyze selected literature as well as student-selected pieces. Units on grammar will focus on recognizing the different parts of speech and incorporating into student’s writing. Writing will be an important part of the course, with specific instruction in narrative, research based, persuasive and analytical writing. Students will also plan and make written oral and visual presentations for a variety of audiences. Individual, small and whole group instruction will be incorporated within the course to provide opportunities for the students to become independent, self-directed learners. |

| 7th Grade PEAK Math |
| Algebra 1 is organized around the families of functions with special emphasis on linear and quadratic functions. Students will learn to represent them in multiple ways - as verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs. These functions will be applied and used to model real-world situations in order to solve arising problems. Students will also learn data analysis and apply geometric properties in the algebraic realm. |

| 10th Advanced Communication Arts |
| The focus will be on the integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This two-semester course will develop the necessary skills to write for a variety of purposes and to read and analyze selected pieces from current periodical and other enriched materials including various poems, essays, short stories dramas and novels. The students will explore current issues and satirical approaches to society’s problems. Activities will also include a survey of satire through the ages, the readings of representative literature on the topic of “Change Through Choices,” and the writing of parodies based on several works read. The interdisciplinary nature of much of the course subject matter will enable to students to work within their academic strength areas in choosing a topic for the culminating presentation. The skills covered will range from thinking strategies, language use, speaking, reading, word skills, study skills and a continued emphasis on the development of quality writing by using the writing process. In addition, students will demonstrate an understanding of various literary terms and technical devices used to criticize and discuss literary effects. Students will also demonstrate the ability to access and analyze information from various resources. |
